The first generation 987 Cayman is a staggeringly good all round sports car, with one of the finest handling chassis combined with great performance, superb build quality and a surprising level of day-to-day practicality. The only issue they face is that the 3.4 engined S models can suffer from bore scoring, which can eventually necessitate an expensive engine rebuild. The result of this is that values of 987.1 Caymans are far lower than their 987.2 “Gen 2″ counterparts, which can mean excellent value IF the 987.1 Cayman you’re looking at has no bore scoring. So when we buy 987.1 era Caymans and Boxsters with the 3.4 S engine, we carry out a bore scope inspection ourselves, and share the results (with pictures) with our customers. We are delighted to get back into stock the nicest early 996 Carrera coupe we’ve ever seen. V749LYA is a manual 1999 Carrera coupe in Arctic Silver with Metropole Blue extended leather interior, and has covered just 71,655 miles over the last 25 years.

Flat Six Classics first bought the car in November 2023 from a local chap who, in addition to regular servicing, undertook a huge programme of refurbishment and improvement over the five years he had the car, covering all aspects: brakes, brake lines, IMS upgrade, clutch, exhaust system, cooling system, suspension, AC condensers, wheel refurbishment, Michelin tyres, modern hifi unit with DAB etc etc. The inch think history file contains all invoices from 2009 to present, along with old purchase invoices, MOT certificates, and a fully stamped service record with 18 stamps for scheduled maintenance.

A fabulous 4 owner 2006 Cayman 2.7 in Guards Red with gold wheels, ST56XBW also features what must be the shortest option list in modern Porsche history. I bet the salesman at Porsche Centre Edinburgh got a right ticking off from his manager for allowing such a thing to be ordered at all!

The original – and canny – long term owner deliberately specced his Cayman with just what he wanted and nothing else. Heated seats, cruise control and a top tinted windscreen, plus the no cost option of having the Cayman badge deleted from the rear boot lid. Total spend on options? £537.02 + VAT, which must be some kind of record. And he had the standard 17″ wheels repainted gold in 2010, well over a decade before they became de rigeur on the latest GT3 press cars from Porsche Cars GB.
