Our main focus at Flat Six Classics is 986/987 era Boxsters and Caymans, but occasionally we get offered a 911 that we just can’t refuse. RX53WPF is just such a car, a facelift (996.2) Carrera 2 Tiptronic that remains in superb condition throughout, having had a significant amount of time and money expended over recent years to maintain and improve it.

First registered on 1st September 2003, RX53WPJ was ordered in Arctic Silver with black extended leather interior, and the following options: 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, rear window wiper, automatic air conditioning, Becker Porsche CDR-23 CD radio and a 6 CD autochanger. Originally delivered on 18″ SportClassic wheels, the car was switched to 18″ 996.2 Carrera wheels in 2013.

The service history is very good, with 16 services recorded in the maintenance record. From 2012 at 45k miles to 2017 at 66k miles, the car was owned by a Mr Vaughan, who kept a detailed log of all the maintenance carried out on the car during his ownership. This record runs to 6 pages of typed A4, and includes research into the car’s engine, which was apparently replaced under Porsche warranty in 2005/6, when the car had covered c.15,000 miles. The replacement engine is dated 2005 so will be fitted with the re-designed IMS bearing, and it’s mileage will be c.55,000 miles. Mr Vaughan had the V5 registration certificate updated to show the correct engine number for the car.

The cosmetic and mechanical condition of the car is excellent throughout, with superb paintwork, unmarked wheels with recent Pirelli PZero tyres, and an interior that shows no appreciable wear to the seats, carpets, headlining, dashboard or other trim – quite remarkable for a 21 year old car, and a testament to the quality of materials and workmanship that went into building these cars in the Zuffenhausen factory in Stuttgart.

On the road, RX53WPF drives superbly, with excellent performance from the 320bhp 3.6 litre flat-six engine, smooth gearchanges from the Tiptronic gearbox, feelsome steering and powerful brakes. The handling and roadholding are excellent as you would expect, with supple suspension that has benefitted from a number of replacement parts over the years. Everything works exactly as it should and the AC blows cold. A wonderful driving experience all round.
